One of the main reasons I'm learning BSL is because of my work, but its more personal to me than that. I became a swimming teacher a few years ago and then began diversifying into swimming lessons for disabled people, I've always been passionate about inclusion in sport and swimming especially and one of our regulars is Deaf, I wanted to be able to understand and talk in BSL with her. A fair few years ago I started watching a few Deaf youtubers, I learnt a lot more about the Deaf community and wanted to expand on my knowledge so I asked my workplace to put me on any courses that came up.

      Why I'm Learning BSL

      I'm learning BSL so I can communicate with my friend and others. It's outrageous that we were never taught this at school so that we can communicate with D/deaf people. I hope to surprise my friend next time I see them. I'm a little worried that I don't pick things up fairly quickly but hopefully I can start to have a conversation with them when I next see them.

      Hi I'm Ellie, I've just started learning sign language so I can communicate with a friend. I'm quite nervous that it will take me a while to pick things up but I'm ashamed we never learnt BSL in school and that I couldn't just communicate with my friend naturally.

      I'm learning BSL because I have hearing loss and tinnitus due to meneieres disease and my hearing getting worse.  I originally took a level 1 course 25+ years ago as I had a friend who was profoundly deaf and a BSL teacher. Unfortunately we lost touch, but now I'm learning again

      Hi!! ive been learning BSL since I was 11 and when I went to uni I thought there would be a BSL society.... there was not, so im here instead

      I'm autistic and, though I generally have little issue using spoken languages, I find myself looking for an alternative that might feel more comfortable and be more accessible to me during verbal shutdowns. Furthermore, BSL will allow me to connect with more people in the disabled community and other communities I am a part of, which I really value.
