Total Newbie

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I am a total newbie to learning BSL.

I attended a Deaf Awareness short course many years ago as I have always been interested in learning BSL.  Finding local courses has been a challenge and I was booked to attend a course in Bath - it was postponed twice due to low numbers, then when it did finally run, I wasn't working and so couldn't put the funds aside (it costs around £300 for Level 1).  it's a shame as I felt I would benefit from attending an actual course where I could interact with others learning at the same pace as me.

I finally decided that I needed to take a better look at what was available online, so that I could at least make a start on learning.  I liked the idea of Skype Tutorials which one of the other sites offer, but again their courses are very expensive.

If anyone is a total newbie like me and would like a practice buddy, then give me a shout :o)

    • Hi Sharna, I have just joined so am also new at this - I have been trying to learn sign language and i am currently doing my level 1 so just at the beginning as well.  I have been going to a class but it would be good to be able to practice during the week.
    • Hi. I’m sharna.  I wear hearing aids as I am hard of hearing and because of that I’ve always wanted to learn bsl but the courses are very expensive and I tried with just an online course but then I couldn’t practice with people which is what I want (otherwise it’ll be like in one ear and out the other but about eyes instead of ears. Also - I made an ear joke haha - not wanting to offend anyone by that though   If you can’t laugh...) I really want it as a second language to the point of I can do it without much thought like I do with English.  And hopefully I’ll make friends. Nice to meet you all

    • Hello everyone i'm pretty new to bsl but would love to learn it. It would help in my job in case i get any deaf customers , it would also be good if i made any deaf friends. If anybody is up for helping me , i'm not straight forward with video call but i'd like to talk about stuff more before i do as i have anxiety and it's a little difficult to video call with a stranger haha. Thanks for taking your time to read this!
    • Hi Trespasser, I work on Wensleydale Railway in North Yorkshire.
    • Hi Ken, what heritage railway would that be then? .. Also glad to see your looking to expand your driving tuition to cater for the deaf community, I guess that will bring in a bit more custom for you and also make a few new friends along the way ..
