Hello! My name is Mary. I am an Early Years Practitioner and I love to learn BSL. My desire is to pursue a career in SEN Teaching. My heart is with the children who have special needs. I want to know more skills, knowledge, and approaches on how to support children with special needs.

Hi Mary, I was drawn to your post as you said you wanted to work in special needs. I wanted to give you some encouragement. I qualified as a primary school teacher 31 years ago. Most of my working life has been as a teacher. I left the profession about 7 years ago, but still drawn to working with children. I’ve had a couple of jobs in between, but I started a new job in April 22 working as a teaching assistant in a secondary special needs school. I absolutely love it, I’m even working with sixth form students- totally not within my experience.

I want to encourage you, if you want to pursue SEN, then do it. It’s so rewarding.

I’m learning sign language as I feel inadequate when students who have hearing issues try to converse with me and I find it hard to understand. I can see the frustration on their faces, I feel they have a voice that needs to be heard. I’m hoping learning some sign will help.
