Hello! My name is Mary. I am an Early Years Practitioner and I love to learn BSL. My desire is to pursue a career in SEN Teaching. My heart is with the children who have special needs. I want to know more skills, knowledge, and approaches on how to support children with special needs.

Hi Mary, I was drawn to your post as you said you wanted to work in special needs. I wanted to give you some encouragement. I qualified as a primary school teacher 31 years ago. Most of my working life has been as a teacher. I left the profession about 7 years ago, but still drawn to working with children. I’ve had a couple of jobs in between, but I started a new job in April 22 working as a teaching assistant in a secondary special needs school. I absolutely love it, I’m even working with sixth form students- totally not within my experience.

I want to encourage you, if you want to pursue SEN, then do it. It’s so rewarding.

I’m learning sign language as I feel inadequate when students who have hearing issues try to converse with me and I find it hard to understand. I can see the frustration on their faces, I feel they have a voice that needs to be heard. I’m hoping learning some sign will help.

    • Hi Jess, great signing!
    • Hello I'm Jess and very gradually working my way through the BSL course, but I don't actually know anyone who signs so perhaps I can practice on here?  I learned fingerspelling as a child and recently thought I'd like to learn a new skill, and thought that BSL could potentially be the most useful.

    • An inclusive environment starts with the space itself, at least for me. People need to feel comfortable, seen, and able to communicate without the room working against them. That is why I think privacy and calm matter so much when you rent a space for business philly. A dedicated studio gives you more control over how clients, students, or collaborators experience the work from the moment they arrive.

    • Our popular 'BSL Level 1 Summer Intensive' course is back. This year, our intensive courses will be held three days per week for four weeks, starting on Tuesday, 28th July and finishing on Thursday 20th August. Classes will be conducted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11am to 4pm. This qualification is designed to enable you to develop an ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a range of familiar contexts, participating in more detailed and open-ended exchanges. The course will develop functional communication in BSL about a range of real-life and daily experiences. You will be able to deal with more routine language tasks and have a sufficient grasp of grammar to cope with some non-routine tasks. For more information or to book your place, visit: www.remark.uk.com/bsl-courses/level-1-summer-intensive You can also reach us at: [email protected] / 0207 269 2620 We look forward to seeing you this summer!
