Hi All,

I am organising a sponsored bike ride on 11th June and I’d love it if anyone here would consider getting involved, either by taking part, volutneering, or just spreading the word. I know it won’t be local to everyone, but any help would be appreciated. The ride starts in Merstham, Surrey (near Redhill) and finishes in Brighton, where Hamilton Lodge School for deaf students will be hosting its summer fete.

At the moment, I’m looking for:

Volunteers – to help at the start with registering riders and to help in/near Brighton with handing refreshments to riders. It’s a good opportunity to practice some BSL if you are Level 1 or 2.

People to take part – you don’t need to be a pro cyclist! Just age 16+ and willing to get some practice in before the day (we have training plans to make it easier and mechanics there on the day if you need them, as well as people who can sign).

People to pop up a poster at their workplace, school, gym etc. I can email or post these. Especially if you live in London, Surrey or Sussex.

There are more detials about the ride here http://www.hamiltonlsc.co.uk/bike-ride, but please reply if you have any questions.

Hopefully this will be a great event for hearing and deaf people to participate in as well as being an opportunity to raise funds for our school and NDCS.

Thanks

Jenna

My son has just started learning it in secondary school as part of an after school club. So I thought this would be perfect timing as we can learn it together so that's why I have enrolled on the online course.
    • Hi all my name is Dixie and I have wated to learn BSL for a while now as my job takes me to lots of different and difffercult situations as i am a fire fighter and on one occaction i was in charge of an incident (RTC) and one of the causlties was deaf and was very scared and unsure of what was happening. I felt ocmpletly hopeless and so upset i could not communicate with him to  give reassurance and help.
    • I've wanted to learn sign language since 2020, after I had learnt how Deaf and HoH people had difficulty reading lips because of the masks, but because BSL wasn't widely taught to hearing people, communication was more difficult for people in the deaf community. I had even come across this course funnily enough, when I was looking for lessons, but got overwhelmed with university exams and shelved the idea for the time being. Then a deaf charity came to my door to ask me to sign up for donations
    • VIDEO TRANSLATION: Hi! My name is Amoke, or AMK for short. I used to live in London but now I live in Nigeria. Hi everyone! It's lovely to meet you all! Forgive my very rusty attempt at signing an introduction 😅 I picked up some of these words from a BSL dicti
    • I've always wanted to learn BSL and even got the course as a Christmas present one year but I'm not great at sticking to things and life got in the way. However, a month or two ago my husband lost his hearing overnight and we suddenly found ourselves in a position where we could only communicate by writing everything down. Without technology and voice recognition apps I would have writer's cramp constantly. He is getting better at lip reading but as I have lost a few front teeth so he struggles
    • Hello my name is Sue and reason I wanted to learn BSL is I have a new job as passenger assistance for a group of Primary schoolchildren who I escort to school and return home at the end of the day, and the school specialise in deafness, and are taught BSL.  Mo
