Hi, I am Megan, 36 years old with three children. 

I wanted to learn sign language as I feel it is needed to improve inclusivity. I believe schools should have it in their curriculums, particularly with an increase of children with SEN attending mainstream school. I have worked with a non-verbal child myself and having another way to communicate would have been a fantastic addition to our working relationship. My daughter showed a keen interest to also learn BSL so we are testing each other each day and thoroughly enjoying this wonderful language.

That is awesome you have someone to train with, I test my little knowledge of BSL with my 7yr old nephew, he has hearing difficulties and he learns from his friends. I totally agree all schools should teach this, maybe as one of the language choices they have (if children still have choices now, it has been a long time since I was at school). x

      Why I'm Learning BSL

      I'm learning BSL so I can communicate with my friend and others. It's outrageous that we were never taught this at school so that we can communicate with D/deaf people. I hope to surprise my friend next time I see them. I'm a little worried that I don't pick things up fairly quickly but hopefully I can start to have a conversation with them when I next see them.

      Hi I'm Ellie, I've just started learning sign language so I can communicate with a friend. I'm quite nervous that it will take me a while to pick things up but I'm ashamed we never learnt BSL in school and that I couldn't just communicate with my friend naturally.

      I'm learning BSL because I have hearing loss and tinnitus due to meneieres disease and my hearing getting worse.  I originally took a level 1 course 25+ years ago as I had a friend who was profoundly deaf and a BSL teacher. Unfortunately we lost touch, but now I'm learning again

      I'm autistic and, though I generally have little issue using spoken languages, I find myself looking for an alternative that might feel more comfortable and be more accessible to me during verbal shutdowns. Furthermore, BSL will allow me to connect with more people in the disabled community and other communities I am a part of, which I really value.
