Canadian ASL learner

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

I'm Stacey, 30 years old and Canadian!
I was 1st introduced to ASL when I was about 8 and my mother signed up for an interpreter course I helped her study and learned quite a bit but she got sick and didn't finish the course.
A few years ago I was working at my local YWCA and we had a regular hard of hearing client. I knew a few signs and was able to finger spell some things but decided I should start learning again. I have tried Memerise (not great course options) and follow some great pages on Facebook, but would really like to practice with people.
I have tried teaching my husband some signs but he's having trouble picking it up since I don't know enough to sign constantly.

I have recently come across some PSE videos and am having trouble with the different structure.

I am very involved in musical theatre & choir, I love planning games nights and escape rooms with friends, and enjoy genealogy, reading, and photography.

Looking forward to exploring this group and meeting people!

    • Good evening my name is Alisha Daniels and live in the Spring Hill, Florida area. I’m a flight attendant and recently have been getting more and more hearing impaired passengers. The reason why I wanted to learn was because I felt it was so disrespectful to keep asking if they could read lips! I decided to start teaching myself then stumbled upon a class in my area.
I can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I had to get my feet wet and learn! I’m nowhere near perfect, but I can at least hold a conversation AND “sign” to passengers. Whether if it’s something to eat or drink, or “signing” the safety demonstration.
I’m a firm believer of “if you don’t use it, you lose it” I’m hoping to find someone to practice with along this journey of mine!
    • Hello,   My name is Katie.  I am 33 years old and missing ASL.  I took 2 years in college and loved it.  Have have been teaching elementary school for the last 10 years and need to use ASL when I lose my voice every few months however, my friend pool of using is none existent.  I like cooking, camping, dogs and red wine.  I live and grew up in Florida and like to travel to NC and NY when I can.  I am looking for friend or more with someone who shares my ASL passion.   I try and live a christian life and I would really like to learn religious signs. I am looking to video chat at least twice a week and get to know someone, build a friends and practice sign.      Sincerely,  KT
    • Hi Everyone! Starting it off with: I just so happened to stumble across this website in search for an online practicing partner particularly in the sign language community.   I love to learn and sign language is no exception to this.  I love the way you use not only your personality with each sign, but the way each emotion is conveyed within that sign as well.   I was actually quite intrigued with this way of communication/language since I was a little girl.  I felt and still do feel as if sign language should be a requirement that everyone should know.  In doing that, it will not only help the deaf community feel more included with our way of living, but vice versa.  Im also in the medical field; in-turn finding this way of communication a lot better on the patients then forcing them to speak when they do not want to or can't.
