ASL Dataset

Hello!

My name is Kyle Gagnon. I am a junior in university. My major is Computer Science. Now the introduction is out of the way I need your help!

Why am I here?

I need help developing a software that can begin to recognize American Sign Language. The goal of the project as of now is to recognize the Alphabet. I want to make it an app so that it is available for everyone to use. I understand that there are plenty of programs and apps out there but I want to make one my own and improve upon it.

What do I need?

As of now I have a very limited dataset. What that means is I do have some pictures to help teach the computer what the sign is but it is very limited. There will be a very rare case where somebody's hand will be highlighted in a dark room. So I need pictures from everyone of the alphabet in sign. I do have a small criteria on how I need it to be done.

Criteria

I need you to take a picture of either hand (can be your dominant or not) and take a picture of it (I will attach an example). Preferably a well enough lit room but doesn't have to be. It does not have to be center at all. I just need your hand in whatever shape you make. If you can do all 26 letters please. If you only do one anything helps at all! You do not need any editing on the picture just leave it as is! Again the picture I attached is to show kind of what I need.

I want to thank you for your time for reading this! I wish you all the best!

    • Hello all! I have been practicing ASL by myself for several years, and I can communicate in slow conversations. But having no one to practice with, I often lose momentum in learning. I would like to become an interpreter someday, or even teach. I was excited to find a community such as this one!
    • Are you going to be learning ASL together or do they have a headstart already?  There are a few ASL dictionaries, like Handspeak, also a lot of material on Youtube.  Google "ASL signs", set it to videos and youtube, and just start watching all the videos.  Take lots of notes to remember the signs.  Open a new notepad file and put in it all the site addresses, you will want to find them later.  look for specific videos on every subject, alphabet, numbers, verbs, time, animals, etc.  Make sure you
