ashetxi Posted January 23, 2019 Report Posted January 23, 2019 (edited) I have been speaking asl for the past 3 years, and I’m unsure as to a few sign name rules. I’ve been hard of hearing my whole life, and so has my father. I’m not deaf, but I’m also not hearing. So can I give sign names to my hearing friends? I respect lots of them and how they’ve learned asl to help me, but I don’t want to disrespect deaf culture at all. Please help, thank you! Edited January 23, 2019 by ashetxi
Rolando Lucero Villalobos Posted March 8, 2019 Report Posted March 8, 2019 Hi! Sorry this is such a late response. Yes, HoH people can give name signs but only IF they are a member of the Deaf community and fluent in ASL. Those who are not any of the above & not Deaf/HoH should not be giving out name signs.
BEEP BOOP Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 Who decides if a person is a ¨member¨ of the deaf community? Also people who are biologically mute or have mutism cant give out name signs?
