Hi everyone,

So I’m new to sign language and I have never learnt another language other English in my life and I’m finding it quite difficult to remember. Does anybody have any tips or advice on how to remember and practice sign language as I find it really interesting and want to possibly go into a carrier using it in the future.

Thank you for all of your help and I hope to hear your advice

Hi Spencer

I'm just about to take the final assessment / examination.

What I did was just take 1 hour each day studying the topic you're currently on. I found it best watching the videos and writing notes down for ,myself either with the description underneath the videos or a way that I would remember and associate the sign with.

I would then make sure I could remember and successfully sign and understand all the different signs on that page before ticking it off and moving on to the next one.

Slow to some people but worth a shot. :)

I would replay the video twice and then practice the sign 4 times. Then I would repeat the process for the next word. I would write each word on a piece of paper as I go along. After learning 5-10 words, I would start signing from the first word on my list (memory only, without looking at the videoclip) and then continue from there, and this helped me revise and learn at the same time.

    • Hi Jess, great signing!
    • Hello I'm Jess and very gradually working my way through the BSL course, but I don't actually know anyone who signs so perhaps I can practice on here?  I learned fingerspelling as a child and recently thought I'd like to learn a new skill, and thought that BSL could potentially be the most useful.

    • An inclusive environment starts with the space itself, at least for me. People need to feel comfortable, seen, and able to communicate without the room working against them. That is why I think privacy and calm matter so much when you rent a space for business philly. A dedicated studio gives you more control over how clients, students, or collaborators experience the work from the moment they arrive.

    • Our popular 'BSL Level 1 Summer Intensive' course is back. This year, our intensive courses will be held three days per week for four weeks, starting on Tuesday, 28th July and finishing on Thursday 20th August. Classes will be conducted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11am to 4pm. This qualification is designed to enable you to develop an ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a range of familiar contexts, participating in more detailed and open-ended exchanges. The course will develop functional communication in BSL about a range of real-life and daily experiences. You will be able to deal with more routine language tasks and have a sufficient grasp of grammar to cope with some non-routine tasks. For more information or to book your place, visit: www.remark.uk.com/bsl-courses/level-1-summer-intensive You can also reach us at: [email protected] / 0207 269 2620 We look forward to seeing you this summer!
