Extended Project on BSL

Hello, my name is Alice :)

I am a first year sixth form student currently trying to figure out what to do my extended project on. Over the first lock-down I completed the British-sign.co.uk introductory course to BSL since learning a language, especially one that is fairly common but not as well known to hearing people, interest me as well as the fact that I think I would like to go into a healthcare profession so it would be a valuable skill and I really enjoyed the learning that I did.  

I'm writing this post to determine peoples opinions on whether it would be okay to do an artifact project on BSL (a physical thing/performance, likely a video) or whether I should just do a dissertation on it/something else. I question this because I am hearing and do not know anyone who uses BSL to communicate, obviously I would do my research like I would for any project, however this does mean that I want to gauge whether making a physical thing (likely a "teaching" tool) is okay when it would be something I learn/teach myself. Part of the extended project expectation is to learn/develop a skill which I believe I would be doing, it is just a case of whether people think it is okay to "teach" something that I would first have to learn/that I have no understanding of already. 

Apologies if this doesn't make any sense, I'm more than happy to reiterate for any details I may have missed or not communicated well enough. If the answer to this question is common knowledge sorry, I like to clarify things when I am unsure.

      Why am I learning BSL?

      I initially started a Facilities Management BSc at the University of Lancashire, however after finding it wasn't for me, I decided to see what other degrees they had on offer. LUCKILY, I found BSL and Deaf studies! I am so happy to be learning BSL and about Deaf culture. It's hard! but worth it.. "I KNOW I PUT THIS ON THE WRONG THREAD!" AHHHHH Chris

      Hi everyone, I’m Chris Long, and I’m absolutely thrilled to join this fantastic BSL community! I’m currently studying BSL and Deaf Studies at the University of Lancashire, and I’m loving every step of this journey. I’m not Deaf, but I live with hearing loss and tinnitus, which has inspired me to learn BSL and connect more deeply with Deaf culture and communication. I’m based in Lancashire and passionate about connecting with people through signing and building relationships in this vibrant community.       Hi! My name is Matthew, I am a Belgian student of English literature and linguistics. I have always had an interest in languages, and have wanted to learn a sign language for quite some time. Since I primarily use English in both my private and professional life, I decided to prioritise BSL for now. I myself am not Deaf but I do experience trouble with auditory processing, and I think accessibility in communication is very important and yet undervalued. I look forward to learning more of BSL and the Deaf community.

      Hi, my name is Ruth, I am profoundly deaf in one ear and hard of hearing the other.  I am a Specialist Deafblind Worker for the areas, Gloucestershire,  Herefordshire and Worcestershire for the company Deafblind Enablement.   I carry out Specialist Assessments for Deafblind needs, making sure their rights are upheld, they have access to information, their independence is enabled and they have assistance with their mobility. I'm currently learning BSL for better communication with clients, also to personally help myself.

      Hello, I am learning BSL because I’ve been intrigued by it for a few years and have enjoyed teaching my toddler some simple signs for better communication over the last year.
