Why am I learning BSL?

Hi, I'm a 69yo and just accepting I'm hard of hearing, more so lately. Most likely age-relatedĀ but with recent deterioration, and life-long tinnitus. Had a lot of middle ear infections, mostly in childhood but in my 40's a month or so of severe conductive deafness following burst ear drums. For myself, while I am bit hard of hearing, it's seem unlikely I will become deaf and absolutely need BSL, but learning something of it now feels a kind of 'insurance' if it would become really useful - I'd not want to age into a degree of deafness that really impaired communication. Of course, that would mean friends & family would need BSL to communicate with me, but then with BSL I might avoid total verbal isolation . Ā But, beyond my needs, BSL is an official UK language and hearing people able to use BSL could be a way for these communities to be in more contact.Ā And - so far, BSL seems fun, indeed ingenious, with its own history. I had no idea, for example, that [I read] American Sign Language is more like European sign languages, as it derives more from French settlers - ie BSL, ASL (etc) Ā are languages with their own long histories. And - yes, following that - I hope learning BSL will challenge and reduce my less than charitable audism - ie will be about increasing my abilities, not 'helping deaf people' (š³!!)Ā -

Hi Batem4n! I learned the alphabet under 2 years ago, and retook the course properly a few months back. I absolutely love it. -
Hi I am new and just started learning. I need some guidance about the centres in London where I can meet up with people who are interested in learning and can do some practice. Many thanks and excuse for my languageĀ

HiĀ everyone, this is my first post on the forum.Ā I work as part of the Front of House Team in a theatre and I am interested in learning some sign language to be able to communicate more easily with the many members of the deaf community who come to the theatre. So far I am doing ok in the comfort of my own home but under pressure I get flustered.Ā Does anyone else find the same problem? I think a lot is down to constant repetition and practice.Ā Ā

Hello everyoneĀ š I'm Layne. I am about to take my BSL202 and BSL203 at the start of next weekĀ š¬Ā I luckily passed BSL201 last weekĀ š I am based in India so it is tricky to find people to practice with. If anyone is up super early in the UK and looking for someone to converse with I am 5.5 hours ahead so will be around! Thank youĀ š
