I'm currently doing BSL level 2 as my daughter is deaf. For the first time this week we had a lecture on the grammatical and syntax difference between BSL and English and SSE. As many of you will no doubt know, the word order is very different. And confusing. So I now have a suspicion why my daughter at 11 has an English reading age of 5. Why would you teach two contradictory methods at the same time? It just defies logic. So my daughter is being taught English, SSE and BSL. I have now asked a professor of sign linguistics, the NDCS, the local autjhority and various support groups. I have received nothing so fa rthat explains this. Anyone here got any ideas?

I agree with you. It must be difficult for a child to then learn a different way to write from how they talk.  It’s bad enough understanding the concept of bsl   Never mind translating that into class work for a child

    • Hi I am new and just started learning. I need some guidance about the centres in London where I can meet up with people who are interested in learning and can do some practice. Many thanks and excuse for my language
    • Hi  everyone, this is my first post on the forum.  I work as part of the Front of House Team in a theatre and I am interested in learning some sign language to be able to communicate more easily with the many members of the deaf community who come to the theatre. So far I am doing ok in the comfort of my own home but under pressure I get flustered.  Does anyone else find the same problem? I think a lot is down to constant repetition and practice.
    • Hello everyone 🙂 I'm Layne. I am about to take my BSL202 and BSL203 at the start of next week 😬 I luckily passed BSL201 last week 😌 I am based in India so it is tricky to find people to practice with. If anyone is up super early in the UK and looking for someone to converse with I am 5.5 hours ahead so will be around! Thank you 🙏

    • Hi, I’m Vivien. I started learning BSL as my son was hard of hearing and wanted to support him to communicate. I’m also looking to understand and support the deaf community and looking forward to learning more!
