Hello everyone

Recommended Posts

I'm learning BSL again after a break of 25 years. You know what they say, use it or loose it! Luckily I've always remembered BSL finger-spelling, which seems to under-pin a lot of signs. I've set up a Signing Support Group at work, as lots of my colleagues are keen to learn too. We work at an historic visitor attraction and want to improve our inclusion efforts for deaf/hearing impaired people.

Has anyone got suggestions for resources that we can use at our monthly meetings? Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi Alexia,

The Group I run is for colleagues at work in South Derbyshire. There are 27 of us at present, with 22 of us recently started the online course.

I'm looking for resources to print out for our monthly meetings so we can learn the signs together & people have something to take away and practice. Not everyone is confident using the internet.

any ideas? What have you come across?

A bit far away from where I am. Sorry, I just wanted to share sign conversations with someone live nearby me.

Thanks for your reply.

    • I'm a student and I hope that taking BSL could help me communicate with clients in my future jobs as well as other Deaf people. It's also interesting to me to learn how BSL is similar or different to languages I am already familiar with. Also, I just think it looks cool!
    • I have been partially deaf since birth and learned some sign as a child but not enough to get by as an adult. I am very likely to lose my hearing entirely within the next few years and i already really struggle to communicate whenever there is any background noise. I am hoping using sign will take away some of the stress of trying to communicate in those situations. My husband is also going to learn.
    • My name is Pia, I am 36 from Scotland. I have been profoundly deaf in my left ear since birth and have partial (deteriorating slowly) hearing in my right ear. I was brought up in the hearing world and speak English as my primary language. I did some sign language lessons when i was in school so I'm not a total stranger to sign but i also haven't had any signing practice since then!
    • Hi, I'm mothcat. I've wanted to learn BSL for a long time, and have been considering it more seriously for the past year. I finally decided to do a course! When I worked in a coffeeshop, one customer came in who signed their order. I couldn't understand what they were saying vocally, and I knew no sign language, so they ended up having to write down their order. It felt really wrong and horrible at the time, and now I know that the word for it is audism. Since then, I've started a job where
