Hi all, my name is Alice.  

I've been learning BSL from free online videos and websites for a while now, I don't live in a place where I can access BSL courses and I can't afford online courses so I've been teaching myself which is frustrating and slow and probably means I make a lot of mistakes without knowing.  So far I can use SSE to sign along with a lot of the things I say but BSL grammar completely baffles me and understanding other people (on youtube seeing as I don't know anyone IRL who can sign) is almost impossible.  It's disheartening, I feel like I've hit a wall with what I can accomplish by myself but now I've found this site hopefully this can help me get back on the right track!

I'm not deaf and I don't know anyone who is, I'm learning BSL because the language is very interesting to me, I speak 2 spoken languages fluently (English and French), conversational German and I'm learning Dutch so I like to be able to communicate with lot of different groups of people and more importantly I like knowing that people can communicate with me if they need to.

Hi Alice,

SSE and BSL are completely different as you said, and without sounding horrible or putting you down. Many Deaf or HoH people don't like when SSE is used. BSL has its own structure that yes at first is hard to get your head aound but with a little help it will all fall into place. I have completed my Level 1 in BSL and am currently working towards my Level 2. I am more than happy to help you. If you wish we can start from the start, and work our way through everything I have been taught and go from there. There are video chat rooms on here that are good so that would help, if not I do have Skype also.

Hi :) It is BSL that I'm (trying) to learn, SSE is obviously simpler and much easier to get your head around to start with, and it's better than nothing, but I would much rather have good BSL skills!  

I would love some help but I, unfortunately, can't use the chat rooms on here and I can't use skype either, I have a really bad internet connection and it just can't cope with stuff like that which is so annoying because it's such a good tool to have.  I struggle with grammar in all my spoken languages as well so it's just not a strong point of mine, it comes to me eventually just from watching people speak (or in this case sign) but it turns my brain to mush while I'm learning it lol

Any help you can give at all would be really appreciated.

Hello Alice:  I'm new here and I'm quite a few steps behind you in my learning so I enjoyed reading your posts (and fellowes52)  As you will know from your French, it is all worth it in the end.  Keep at it. :)

      So far, I am really enjoying my BSL journey. I think that it is something I would’ve never done and I’m glad I’m pushing myself to do it. I think it’s great and everyone should have a go and take a chance and start to learn it because you never know when it will come in Handy

      I used to work in an SEMH children's home, 5 years ago, and I began to learn BSL alongside some of those young people. I then saw a BSL evening course at my local high school and took part in that, we did an introduction, then all nagged the tutor so much, she agreed to do Level 1! We got 2 weeks in when covid lockdown struck and the course, like everything else, was cancelled. 2 years ago I got together with my partner, who has hearing loss, which is progressing. We decided it would be a good idea to learn BSL now, while she can still hear a bit, so we are prepared. 2 of my adult children and their partners are learning alongside us. We post question and answer videos on our family WhatsApp to practice, our current quest is to see who can sign the most unlikely occupation and place to live! My partner already finds it very difficult to make out what people are saying in busy or noisy spaces, so the few signs we have learnt together, along with fingerspelling, have already been very helpful and we can all see how much this new skill will benefit all of us.

      Hi,  My name is Chloe, I work in a SEND school within Norfolk. Whilst at this provision we had a non-verbal student join us, whilst he does not use BSL or Makaton to communicate it got me thinking that the chances of us having a pupil that does is incredibly high and unfortunately it is not part of our mandatory training therefore I asked if I could sign up for BSL training as part of my CPD and our company agreed, I then had 20 colleagues ask to join as well.

      Hi im a newbie to this and hope to get to know the community of users on here.  I am myself partially deaf with degeneration in both ears. I wanted to do the course for my interest as well as it could be used further on in my life .... so its a WIN WIN XX

      Hi there👋 I just thought I'd drop in and mention that I joined a BSL Society that takes place in my university today. I came along to the drop in session and despite being quite nervous, I learned a thing or two and made a few friends. I recognised a lot of the beginner signing from the british-sign.co.uk course (level 1) I've been practicing.  A funny small difference I noticed was the regional dialect - being in Scotland there's a few minor differences in how to sign place names, etc than in England. It's been so fun and interesting to learn about!
