Hi! I am a Hard of Hearing Specialist in Utah. Our program is free to individuals who are hard of hearing no matter where they live. We offer support and cover things like basic sign language and lip reading classes in person and online. We also have a weekly online support/discussion group for individuals with hearing loss and/or their communication partners. I have been working on my sign language recently because I have been interacting a lot more with the Deaf and hard of hearing community through my work. I learned sign 20 years ago but then never used it, so now I have been relearning ASL.

Hi, my name is Nadeema and I’m just starting my journey in learning ASL. I’m a complete beginner. Like I don’t even know the basics yet but I truly want to learn.. Two years ago, I had ear surgery when i faced some hearing problems and i gain back my hearing after that surgery. But recently, I’ve started experiencing hearing loss again. The doctors told me I might need to go through the same surgery, but I also know that this may keep happening. It’s emotionally and financially heavy, I don’t want to keep depending on expensive treatments or be a burden to those around me.. and also I’ve reached a point where I feel like, if this is what life is offering or god is giving, maybe I should accept it with strength and prepare myself. That’s why I want to learn ASL..not only because I may lose my hearing permanently someday, but also because I believe sign language is one of the most beautiful forms of communication. I don’t want to feel like I’m disappearing from the world..I want to connect, express, and live fully, even if it’s in silence.. I’m hoping to find kind people here who will help me step by step.. I don’t want to feel alone. I really hope I can be part of this community and learn with your support.. And yeah here I'm with an open heart, ready to learn.. Thank you for being here.

My name is Karen and I am hearing. I've been around deaf and hard of hearing people all of my life. My parents were both interpreters and they instilled in us the language and love for DHH people. I'm currently an instructional specialist in a public school district. I am the lead specialist for the DHH programs in our buildings. I've recently recognize that my vocabulary is "old". Apparently many of the signs that I have used all of my life have changed somewhat. So I am planning on spending my summer learning the "new" vocabulary and practicing it so that I can be more prepared for our students in the fall.

Dear community, My name is Terence, and I am currently writing my Master's thesis in Media & Communication Management at Macromedia University Munich, Germany. As the child of Deaf parents and a fluent French Sign Language user, I am personally and academically committed to issues of accessibility and inclusion. My thesis focuses on how advertising can become more inclusive for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) individuals. As part of my research, I am conducting qualitative interviews with Deaf individuals to understand their experiences with advertising, representation, and accessibility. Would it be possible to connect me with someone from your community who would be willing to participate in a short, fully accessible interview (30–45 minutes, online)? Therefore, I would be happy to have interpretation services to support the conversation as I am not able to understand ASL. Hello Tammy, I am hearing as well. I just started learning sign language on my own. I am preparing to take an American Sign Language class next semester and want to get a head start. I'm in the Eastern Daylight Time Zone. I would be interested in practicing ASL as we learn together.

I am hearing but I have been interested in sign language for years. I wish I could remember what I have learned. I took a semester in high school, I took a semester in college. Loved it. Then I became a mom and forgot everything. This past year I became interested again. I am 50 now and want to learn.
