Hi!! I'm new to signing, and the site. From Canada. Your signs are different... I don't know how to explain really which ones, how you say what age you are, and the number sign looks different too. All a little confusing for someone new. Do you know a sign for the word "website" ? I try to search it and get websites for asl, but not the sign for the word, lol.聽聽

@PenrosePirateHey! Welcome to the site! Yeah if you're signing in Canada, you'll likely see different variations of what we use here in America, although that stands true even for different states and counties within the U.S.聽 If you're ever wondering which version of a sign to use, ask around your local Deaf community, and use what they do.聽 Anyway, about how I signed my age, I actually agree it does look weird!聽 It seems odd for a couple reasons, first because I didn't sign "I AM" or "ME" before my age, and that's because I had already signed it once at the beginning of my list of things about me, so it was unnecessary to sign it again.聽 Secondly because I used a version of the sign for "AGE-19" that my local community uses but I've not seen just about anywhere else.聽 Here's a good video that explains signing your age pretty well:

For the number itself, I used the first variation shown in this video:

And as far as the sign for website, I use the W-W-W version, essentially a W handshape聽 that you bounce twice while moving slightly to the right.聽 The second sign I do in the vid below is "ONLINE" or "INTERNET", just cause it seemed relevant :)

Sorry for the spam, hope this helps!

Hi Daron,聽

You mentioned that these chat rooms aren't the greatest.聽 聽These are the only chat rooms I've been in.聽 What do the other chat rooms have to offer?聽 聽I just got skype and chatted with my daughter once.聽 I signed just as poorly in skype as I do in these chat rooms.聽聽

    • Hi everyone! I am a graduate student at the University of California, Davis. I'm desperately looking for individuals who use ASL--especially interpreters--for a pilot study for my dissertation. If you have a spare moment, I would like to invite you to take this completely online research survey. Your contribution to this research will help neuroscientists learn more about how sign language is processed in the brain for those who use both a spoken and signed language. This research has been approved by the UC Davis IRB board. Below is some more information, and the link to the study: --- Study of Sign Language Processing:聽 What is the purpose of this study? By evaluating participant responses to this short, online experiment, we can get a better understanding of the neural mechanisms that are used to support sign language processing in the brain. Who can participate? We encourage anyone (even hearing parents or individuals who use ASL consistently) from anywhere in the US to participate. Eligible participants meet the following criteria: 路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽Between聽18-50聽years聽of聽age. 路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽Normal聽cognitive聽function. 路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽Consistent use of American Sign Language. 路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽Have聽normal聽or聽corrected-to-normal聽vision. 路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽High school competency (9th聽grade) in reading English What does participation look like? This experiment is an approximately 20-minute online study, which should be taken on a laptop or computer. You will be presented with a consent form, a short background questionnaire, and then a decision task. You will see videos of a deaf person signing, then you will press a key on the keyboard in response.
