  3. Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone here can help me. I have written a play, a solo show, and there are a couple of sections in which I will be signing BSL. I completed a certifying basic BSL course, so I can sign, but these concepts are quite subtle and tricky (mainly about spirituality and religion, or certain specific actions such as 'stumbling'). I know some of them, found others online, but I still don't have all of them so I'm wondering whether anyone can send me in the right direction? A BSL consultant/coach would be ideal here because I also want to make sure I do all the signs right, after I learn what they are. But in the meantime, if everyone has any pointers for me, I'd be super grateful. Either showing me the signs for this section, or advising who to contact. It's only 250 words (not all of them to be signed), about half a page. Here's the text below. Thanks so much in advance! Alexander ----------------- NOTE: Only the parts in italic are signed (and spoken), the rest is spoken only and is given here for context purposes. SCENE 3 Sorry, sir, I can't hear you. (…) A feeling. That’s how you described it, wasn’t it? I said, how do you live your spirituality if you can’t recite the Qur’an? It’s a feeling, you signed. It can happen at any time, any moment. I could be on the bus, or cooking. Or talking to you. And I just know, and I am grateful. (Awkward) I don’t get it, I said. I also get a feeling, sure, it’s my Faith that God is there, He’s everywhere, but -- learning the Scriptures, studying them, reciting them brings me closer to God. Makes me feel right, inside. That’s the best we can hope for in our earthly life, is it not? Sure, you replied, simply. So how can you... (A beat) I’m sorry. I’m not trying to make you feel inadequate, I just -- You just want to know what it’s like to be me. It’s okay. I understand. But you can’t. Only I can be me. You can only be you. And we can only do our best, until we’re living the life God has given us. (A little annoyed) Yes, obviously, but — SCENE 7 It was a baby, officer. I turned around, from the distance, and saw him getting near, stumbling towards the backpack. (Laughs) Little baby explorer. He wanted to check it out, play with it. “It's not a toy!”, I shouted. Back when I could shout. Speak, even. (…) Please, officer... Will you save me? (…) (To the baby brother, smiling) Hey, how are you? (…) I love you. Let’s go. ----------------
  4. Hi everyone, I'm learning Sign Language because I want to work within accessible theatre when I finish University. I'm also dyslexic which made it really hard to learn a language in school so I thought the most useful language to learn would be one that people in the UK use too. I'd love to chat with anyone, maybe even practice too, Stay safe, Kate 😄

A frank and gutsy retelling of a classic in which three actors share the role of Juliet, each owning Shakespeare’s heroine for themselves while challenging universal ideas of beauty and sexuality: https://bit.ly/2zkNNi2 Weaving text from Romeo and Juliet with hard-hitting stories from women whose femininity and authenticity have been questioned by society, Redefining Juliet celebrates difference to prove that anyone can play the iconic part. Appearing regularly on British television, Storme Toolis has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. Inspired by a desire to portray Juliet herself, she collaborates with other performers who have felt like outsiders to bring multiple dimensions to the famed romantic lead. Featuring key scenes from the play, interspersed with resonant details of the actors’ personal lives, this is an empowering production, both joyous and sad, shot through with wit. Duration: 1 hour Age guidance: 14+ Thu 29 Nov, 7.45pm BSL-interpreted and post-show talk Fri 30 Nov, 7:45pm BSL-interpreted and audio-described

Enter a world where sight and sound give way to tactile communication in this ‘cutting-edge piece of theatre that transports its audience beyond the theatre seat’ (Australian Stage): https://bit.ly/2OWhPSZ Created by Heather Lawson and Michelle Stevens, this immersive event shares the humour, grief, beauty and profound isolation of their lives as deafblind artists. After an introductory film, you’ll be provided with individual headphones and goggles, then guided into an unseen promenade installation. With light and sound distorted and restricted, it is touch that becomes integral to connection. Recipient of Melbourne’s Green Room Award for Innovation in Experiential Performance, director Jodee Mundy is fluent in Australian sign language because everyone in her family is deaf except for her. Collaborating with Lawson and Stevens – experts in tactile sign interpreting and social haptic communication – she has shaped Imagined Touch into a piece that alters our perceptions and reframes disability as an opportunity for untapped human potential. This promenade installation is designed to be accessible to all audiences, uses elements of social haptics, audio-description, British sign language and subtitles, with tactile sign guides on hand to assist. Visitors with access requirements are eligible for a free ticket for their companion. Each experience lasts 30 minutes/bags and shoes to be left in the cloakroom before the performance begins. Timed admissions available between 4pm–9.40pm (last admission) on Wed 7, Thu 8 & Fri 9 Nov and 12pm–5.40pm (last admission) on Sat 10 & Sun 11 Nov 2018. Age guidance 12+
