I have started to learn BSL online, as I learnt a little bit when I was 14 (A long time ago now!).  I hope I improve and get a little more fluid with my signing.  I am a supply primary teacher and My husband and I also host Accessible Games for People with learning or Physical disabilities.  So I would like to be able to help anyone who attended one of our events if they used BSL.

I'm a mum to three children with a sensory neural hearing loss which they have had since birth. we don't use a to of sign language at home but have picked up bits on the way and now I would like to become more fluent and be able to work with Deaf or deaf individuals within my work as an holistic therapist.

Hi all,

I've been interested in languages including BSL since I was in my teens (now in my 30s). Back then I couldn't find a sensibly priced course in my area and there wasn't as much avalible online. As our dear friend Covid-19 has utterly ruined my plans for the next few months (I'm in an 'at risk' group), I decided to use some of the time that I'll be stuck in the house to make a proper start on learning to sign. I know a few signs, but never got much past finger spelling.

Anyone else here using online courses to help them stay sane while self isolating?

I’m doing the same as I now have the time to do it. I also learnt a bit when I was 14, but never continued with it, which I regret. Now doing the online course, which I’m enjoying  so far. A good idea given current times too 👍🏻

Hiya, I’ve done the alphabet (which i already knew) numbers (which had changed sine I learnt years ago) colours, jobs and countries/cities. Need to practise those before moving on 👍🏻

      Hiya guys! My name is Alex and I’m 22 years old. I am not part of the Deaf community, however I work in a charity shop where we sometimes get customers who use sign to communicate. I love having a chat with everyone who comes through the door, and I don’t want anybody to feel left out of that, so I’ve just started an online BSL course so I can connect with my community more. I’m super excited to learn more!

      Hi I’m Shelly.i have always been fascinated by BSL and always wanted to learn. I am frontline with the ambulance service and having come across people iof the Deaf community I have now vowed to learn it.

      Hello, Martin! I am currently taking up a course which I paid for 3£, it's in british-sign co uk. It's a nice course. It is great for goal-oriented type of learners. You get 2 years of access and a certificate. You can do assessments there. Goodluck on your journey! And it's nice to know that stories like this exist, makes me wanna tear up. 😁

I think learning new things is very important and how very thoughtful of you to think about BSL, there is an online course, if you click "BSL online course" at the top of the page it takes you straight to it, you don't have to make a monthly donation just a one time donation of however much you can afford minimum 3EUR.  I hope you continue this journey

      I am 63 and have health issues but I still want to be of use.  I have thought for a long time about learning sign language, but never ĥad the confidence to follow it through. I am now unemployed, with 4 years left to official retirement. I met a rep for the deaf on the way to the bus home today from the job centre. Even though I could'nt afford to to donate monthly the young lady thanked me for stopping and showed me 3 simple sighed words, which I will ror some reason always remember.  When I got home and sat watching TV there was a antiques program on where both people where deaf. This just confirmed the fact that I would love to help, there is so much scope to help the deaf comunity, auctions, schools plus so much more. How can I learn and get involved? Martin
