I just finished the topic on family and relationships but there doesn't appear to be a sign provided for Boyfriend. Can anyone show me - is it just 'boy' and 'friend'? or is there a specific sign like 'husband' and 'wife'? 

I'm still working on signing to the camera and knowing where to position my hands so the signs are clear so apologies for any weird looking signs. 

Quiz:

How many brothers do I have?

What are my brothers names?

What did I tell you about my sister?

How old are my parents?

What do I not have (2 possible answers)?

- Dad age 78. Mum age 66.

- You have no pets.

You did very well to sign this information, great start. Just a little disjointed in terms of connecting the sentences but that will come with time and confidence. Also just an extra bit of information, you do not need to sign 'what' with every piece of information - it is more used as a question. So for example you can say 'Name, me, Ellie' 'Age, me, 24' etc. Does that make sense?😀

Thank you so much for replying! Yes! So far I've got lots of vocab but not really sure how to connect things...so end up just saying lots of separate sentences/phrases. Just completed the section on interests this morning, which I really enjoyed...may try and do a video of that! 

P.s. sorry about the positioning - still can't work out where to put my hands in relation to myself on the camera. Keep getting muddled by my reflection and left and right 😂

Hey Ellie!

Your hand positioning looks okay for a beginner to me, just maybe try and sign with your arms/hands closer to your body. Don't worry about the camera - you will get more confident with that! From that video, I could understand that your boyfriend's name is Steven. Keep it up! If you would like some extra practise, I could do a skype/zoom call with you if you would like? I am level 1 so it would be beneficial for me too😁

Hey! I'd love to do a skype or zoom session for practice! That would be amazing! When are you free? :D Just finished first attempts at tenses, telling the time, days of the week, months etc....so many signs now. I definitely need to keep practicing so as not to forget.

hello! great job I do use BSL and for starter is not bad the only thing I would tell you if talk with your voice off because people like me lip read but also there is a lot of sign meaning 2+ e.g 1 sign can mean 2 different thing so that why your mouth must be clear to lip read but carry on and soon you will be ace at this! also

quick note I don't know any sign for boyfriend and what Phoebe show to me is son/boy 2 time but every town/village have their own sign

Hi Ellie and Phoebe! 

I've enjoyed watching your videos for practice. I really need to have video chats to keep practicing between the levels so I don't forget everything I learnt. Are you up for some practice? I tried to record a video here but it didn't work!

      How to sign my job?

      Hi all, I've just started a BSL Level 1 course, and next week we're going to sign about work. I'm trying to work out in advance how to sign what I do, but struggling a bit, so I hope the community here can help. I'm a Satellite Communications Engineer (communications as in telecommunications). Looking on SignBSL there are multiple signs for satellite. I rather like the one with the dominant hand index finger orbiting a closed fist, as it invokes the satellite rather than the dishes. I'm struggling to work out how to sign Communications (in the telecom sense). Engineer seems fairly straightforward, fingers on both hands meshed and rotating like cog-wheels. Any advice as how best to sign my job please? Obviously, I'll discuss it with my teacher too, but would like to have some idea before the class if I can. Many thanks!

      Hi  My name is Julie. I have been fortunate enough to be able to access the British Sign Language course via Nerve Tumours UK, a national charity which provides support and advice for families living with Neurofibromatosis. I was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) in 1994 when I was 30 years old. I am fortunate to be mildly affected by the condition with only slight hearing loss in my right ear following surgery 30 years ago. I have made many friends over the years who are profoundly deaf and I have always wanted to learn but never had the time or opportunity. Learning about this course through the charity gave me the impetus to set aside the time to learn. I want to be able to communicate with my friends and family and future proof my life if I lose my hearing further down the line. I am finding it quite hard to set aside the quiet time to learn as we are in the process of relocating to Devon, but I am determined to succeed.

      Hi there, I am Hannah-Mae and I am enjoying learning more sign language. I grew up with a partially deaf sister, and now my Dad is profoundly deaf. It always struck me how isolating the world still is for the deaf community. I unfortunately will be blind in a few years time but I know that both people's attitudes and modern living is much more accommodating of visual impairments than hearing ones. Because people don't see it they don't consider it. I work in communications for a charity, and am pushing for more sign language inclusion. All our videos have subtitles as standard but we can go further both on recorded and live events. I also am really behind BSL in the curriculum. Whilst I can still see I want to help make it so that the communities we live in are more inclusive.

      Hi, got a slightly odd issue - I find that signing the number 3 very difficult because of my tendons. The sign I've learned in the online course i'm doing is the index, middle and ring finger up, thumb and pinky down. It is currently impossible for me to have my pinky finger go down without my ring finger also going down unless i use my thumb to hold my pinky finger down manually, and on my primary hand it is difficult for me to get my thumb to hold my pinky finger down for long and without hand pain both while i'm doing the sign and for an amount of time afterwards. Is it permissible to switch primary hands for a single sign? it's a lot easier to hold my pinky finger down with my secondary hand without pain. if not, is there another sign that's able to be used for 3? or am I ok to just do thumb + index + middle finger for 3 and the context will be enough to confirm for someone I'm signing 3?
