Welcome back Gerry! I hope you manage to find members of your local Deaf community to interact with. I am not Deaf myself, but i do know CIs are a controversial topic in the community. Hi (again) everyone. If you look at my previous posts over the past couple of years (!!!) you can see that this latest attempt is surely going to be THIRD TIME LUCKY as I am determined to get back up to speed on my BSL course, as well as become more active on this Forum. Just a bit of an update. I'm now 76, and lined up for an NHS Cochlear Implant (CI) probably in the next 6-9 months. I’m learning BSL because my autistic daughter is too. She can manage to sign in situations that she previously felt too overwhelmed to be in.

I'm not Deaf or Hard of Hearing. But as an autistic person, I feel like using BSL is less stressful than speaking. I have difficulty processing verbal information due to my autism. If I am not looking at a human's face, it is more difficult to understand what noises they are making. Signing feels more natural to me, and reduces the things I need to pay attention to in conversations. I am still at the toddler level of BSL, so I still struggle following a conversation in BSL.
