  3. Hello everyone, my name is Cole. I'm taking my first ASL class at college right now and would love to have some friends to talk with since none of my friends know ASL. I don't know too much sign yet, but I bet we could all learn from each other! I have no idea how we actually talk through this site.. but I will do some research on it. (I figured out how to add a video to the post tho!)

  10. Hey all, I'm Brie, 32f, from right outside Nashville, TN. I am teaching myself ASL via online classes, books and youtube channels because I have a degenerative hearing loss disorder and I want to have resources for once I can't hear anymore. I don't know any deaf or HoH folks so I'd love to have a practice partner. Thanks y'all!

  11. I think it would be a really great feature to have some type of notification be able to go out to those who request it that notifies them when someone has created/joined a room and are looking for others to sign with. The video chat feature is really great if you know that others are on. The problem with the iteration that it is now is that people need to know that there are people available to sign with and the current system requires a bit of fate or planning to ensure that you are in the lobby at the same time. Could you look into creating a system whereby a text or email notification is sent out to those that subscribe so that they will be notified when someone is looking for others to sign with.

  14. So, I'm gonna be a little bit of a di*k. This is kind of offensive. And you'll end up pissing off Deaf people doing this. This is at it's best cultural appropriation and at worst it's audism. This is taking a culture that you apparently know nothing about. A language that you obviously know nothing about. And then using those things for your own personal gain. If you want your graphic novel about deaf people. Why they need to be deaf, I don't know. Unless you're just using it because you feel your characters need to have a disability, and deaf was the winner of the day. But how are you going to give your book an "authentic feel" if you can't bother to take the time to learn enough about a culture to say a basic sentence? Do your own work. Learn it, like everyone else has had to. Spend some time with a deaf person. Learn who they are as people and then you can speak, as an outsider, to their culture. But to just ask someone to do work for you so you can gain from another culture is a little offensive.

  15. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that might be the sign for PHARMACY. You signed MEDICINE + STORE. So I'm guessing that means PHARMACY. I don't know the context of the conversation. But that would be my guess.

  16. Hi! I'm Demi. I have decided to pick up ASL because it seems very fascinating and interesting. I've been in the situation before where I meet someone who is deaf and have no idea how to communicate with them. After watching a short film on youtube about being deaf it made me want to learn ASL. I'm still really new, but I'd like to have a practice partner so I could work on my speed and reading skills.

  20. Hi Jax, I'm Aislyn I saw your posts on helpful ways to immerse yourself in ASL culture. I love the idea of video diaries! I am hearing and have been studying ASL on and off since I watched Switched at Birth in like 2014, I recently picked it back up and am looking for a conversation partner. I have not had any formal training but I love watching Lifeprint videos by Dr. Bill Vickers. Not sure if you'll see this, but would you want to practice together? I have all the same video tools but flipgrid

  21. Just joined the site. i have been using this site for a while to improve my receptive skills. I am hard of hearing and wear hearing aids. Because of this it has made me aware of how helpful it would be to know ASL. I work at the information desk at a hospital and have had a couple of occasions to use ASL although I struggle with it. I have been following Bill Vicars for a couple of years and have attended a couple of in person ASL classses.

  22. Thanks Amber for the YouTube link. It would be great if someone would create a new version of this, however I did watch the first video and found it to be very helpful. I have followed Bill Vicars YouTube videos and have taken a couple of in person sign language classes. I still struggle with receptive finger spelling and signing in conversation. I pick up a sign or two in conversation, but the trick is putting it all together. Thanks again. Fred

  23. I've noticed there's an increasing amount of people attempting to use the chat rooms on the website to practice. I'm here to possibly discuss a solution. If people read this, we could arrange to have people congregate to the chatroom at around 9 pm EST two days a week. At this time most people would be off work and have a little bit of free time. My suggestion is everyone tries to hop on around 9 pm EST either every Friday (as per the calendar) or every Wednesday and Saturday, where people get two opportunities per week to meet others. What do you guys think? I try to check the chat every other day at around 8 pm EST. My ultimate suggestion is 9 pm EST on Friday. What do you guys think?

  26. Hello Everyone, I am currently a beginner at ASL but absolutely love the language! I'm hoping on here I can meet some people and learn a lot from others. The one problem I have is finding people that want to practice sign, it could be anyone patient enough to go slower and hopefully teach me some stuff. Maybe in the future I could get a video chat going with some people that would want to practice together? Let me know If anyone wants to schedule something!

  42. Hello! I am HOH and live a deaf life except for school, I don't really want hearing aids and I am an intermediate signer who is willing to take on some beginners and work with them!!

  43. Technically you can sign either. The more ASL version would be YOUR DOCTOR WHO with eyebrows lowered for the WHO. But you could technically ask WHO YOUR DOCTOR with eyebrows lowered the entire time. But this is usually considered more English. But you will still find Deaf people that do it. It's just not as ASL as the first example.

  44. I use the first version. The second version looks like it might actually come from hearing people. It's a thing we do when we're hoping for something. Usually accompanied with someone saying something like, "Fingers crossed, I hope I get that job."
    2 points
  45. I'm not sure if this is correct, but I use the first version for the noun (ex. there's hope for the future) and the second version for the verb (ex. I hope you have a good day).

  46. I'm learning ASL because I feel that the language is so underrated. I like being able to communicate in a different way without using the voice but the art of sign. I am only a beginner and hope to one day increase my skills in time. Nice to meet you all

  47. I'm learning because it is something to me i feel i should learn. There are so many wonderful people out there who live in a whole different kind of world that is still the same world as those like me who can speak. I honestly want to learn from their point of view. Learning a language like Spanish or French is just not something that is pulling for me to learn. ASL is just one that is
