Hello everyone, my name is Cole. I'm taking my first ASL class at college right now and would love to have some friends to talk with since none of my friends know ASL. I don't know too much sign yet, but I bet we could all learn from each other! I have no idea how we actually talk through this site.. but I will do some research on it. (I figured out how to add a video to the post tho!)3 points

Hey all, I'm Brie, 32f, from right outside Nashville, TN. I am teaching myself ASL via online classes, books and youtube channels because I have a degenerative hearing loss disorder and I want to have resources for once I can't hear anymore. I don't know any deaf or HoH folks so I'd love to have a practice partner. Thanks y'all!3 points

I think it would be a really great feature to have some type of notification be able to go out to those who request it that notifies them when someone has created/joined a room and are looking for others to sign with. The video chat feature is really great if you know that others are on. The problem with the iteration that it is now is that people need to know that there are people available to sign with and the current system requires a bit of fate or planning to ensure that you are in the lobby at the same time. Could you look into creating a system whereby a text or email notification is sent out to those that subscribe so that they will be notified when someone is looking for others to sign with.3 points

So, I'm gonna be a little bit of a di*k. This is kind of offensive. And you'll end up pissing off Deaf people doing this. This is at it's best cultural appropriation and at worst it's audism. This is taking a culture that you apparently know nothing about. A language that you obviously know nothing about. And then using those things for your own personal gain. If you want your graphic novel about deaf people. Why they need to be deaf, I don't know. Unless you're just using it because you feel your characters need to have a disability, and deaf was the winner of the day. But how are you going to give your book an "authentic feel" if you can't bother to take the time to learn enough about a culture to say a basic sentence? Do your own work. Learn it, like everyone else has had to. Spend some time with a deaf person. Learn who they are as people and then you can speak, as an outsider, to their culture. But to just ask someone to do work for you so you can gain from another culture is a little offensive.3 points

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that might be the sign for PHARMACY. You signed MEDICINE + STORE. So I'm guessing that means PHARMACY. I don't know the context of the conversation. But that would be my guess.3 points

Hi! I'm Demi. I have decided to pick up ASL because it seems very fascinating and interesting. I've been in the situation before where I meet someone who is deaf and have no idea how to communicate with them. After watching a short film on youtube about being deaf it made me want to learn ASL. I'm still really new, but I'd like to have a practice partner so I could work on my speed and reading skills.2 points

Hello everybody, at the school I attend we are going to be doing a year+ long project about whatever we want, and for my project I thought it would be cool to make sign language gloves. I originally had this idea before I knew that people had already tried this, but after researching it a little I had some concerns, mostly because it seems like this idea is found offensive to people in the deaf/hard of hearing community. I feel that my idea differs from others enough that I wanted to get feedback. I would like to say that I was thinking that the person using these gloves would be someone who is biologically mute, but can still hear, and it would be used in situations such as a court. I have a friend who's father is a nurse, and what he told me is that they have to pay translators around $100 or more an hour, and even if they don't use them for that whole hour, they still have to pay them that much. The purpose I am intending with the gloves is to reduce costs for the business, and cut out the middleman. I know that sign language is more than just hang gestures, so I would also try and figure out a way to record expressions and other important movements. As part of our project we also have a stakeholder, or someone who would benefit from our project, and I was going to make sure that it involves someone form the ASL community. What are your guys thoughts on this, and if this is a good idea, what should I do to make sure its actually helpful. Sorry if anything I said was offensive in any way, and thanks for your guys input.2 points

Hi Jax, I'm Aislyn I saw your posts on helpful ways to immerse yourself in ASL culture. I love the idea of video diaries! I am hearing and have been studying ASL on and off since I watched Switched at Birth in like 2014, I recently picked it back up and am looking for a conversation partner. I have not had any formal training but I love watching Lifeprint videos by Dr. Bill Vickers. Not sure if you'll see this, but would you want to practice together? I have all the same video tools but flipgrid2 points

Thanks Amber for the YouTube link. It would be great if someone would create a new version of this, however I did watch the first video and found it to be very helpful. I have followed Bill Vicars YouTube videos and have taken a couple of in person sign language classes. I still struggle with receptive finger spelling and signing in conversation. I pick up a sign or two in conversation, but the trick is putting it all together. Thanks again. Fred2 points

I've noticed there's an increasing amount of people attempting to use the chat rooms on the website to practice. I'm here to possibly discuss a solution. If people read this, we could arrange to have people congregate to the chatroom at around 9 pm EST two days a week. At this time most people would be off work and have a little bit of free time. My suggestion is everyone tries to hop on around 9 pm EST either every Friday (as per the calendar) or every Wednesday and Saturday, where people get two opportunities per week to meet others. What do you guys think? I try to check the chat every other day at around 8 pm EST. My ultimate suggestion is 9 pm EST on Friday. What do you guys think?2 points

Hi! My name is Jasmine, and I'm 17 years old. I have been studying ASL for a little bit, but didn't retain much. I have been watching Bill Vicars and Meredith ASL trying to learn some more ASL, but I learn better if I have someone to have a conversation with. I would prefer it if you were 15-17 years old, so it would be more relatable for the both of us.2 points

Well, when i was younger I found out that I am hard of hearing In my left ear since my brother decided to jam my ear with a quetip. And I started watching this amazing new show called switched at birth. And I have always wanted to learn sign language, since I'm hard of hearing as is, I use alot of body language already. So my daughter and I have actually started picking up on it very well and I'm def interested in learning more.2 points

Hello! I am HOH and live a deaf life except for school, I don't really want hearing aids and I am an intermediate signer who is willing to take on some beginners and work with them!!2 points
-
I use the first version. The second version looks like it might actually come from hearing people. It's a thing we do when we're hoping for something. Usually accompanied with someone saying something like, "Fingers crossed, I hope I get that job."2 points
-
I'm not sure if this is correct, but I use the first version for the noun (ex. there's hope for the future) and the second version for the verb (ex. I hope you have a good day).2 points

Hello, my name is Reggie, and I've recently decided to learn sign language. After some unfortunate events in recent years, talking has become quite the burden on my psyche, and I do almost anything I can to avoid it. My therapist suggests that I have simply become selectively mute, which, when taken into consideration of everything that has happened and my past mental history, it rather makes sense. So, here I am, ready to learn a whole new way of speaking. If anyone has any tips or would like to help me, that would be greatly appreciated. I am, in fact, particularly interested in video chatting and any form of conversing through sign language, since I live in a very isolated rural area and there is no one here for me to practice ASL with. Once again, if anyone would like to or possibly could help me, that would be wonderful and I thank you.2 points

I'm learning ASL because I feel that the language is so underrated. I like being able to communicate in a different way without using the voice but the art of sign. I am only a beginner and hope to one day increase my skills in time. Nice to meet you all2 points
-
I am learning sign language because I wish to connect with the Deaf community and I am majoring in ASL interpreting and I want to become a good interpreter that respects cultural nuance. I'm just starting out, I just finished ASL 1 and I am in search of deaf friends that would be willing to practice with me.2 points
